Food with Flair at Hamm & Uys
09 November 2020
As a foodie, I have a bucket list of restaurants either for special ocassions or just for "sommer" that I'd like to experience and I had to pinch myself for a moment when I was given the opportunity to review one of those bucket list restaurants better knows as Hamm and Uys.
Food programs/reality shows has always been my favourite and I got to know Johnny Hamman and Marius Uys just like the rest of South Africa on the Afrikaans reality cooking show Kokkedoor (obviously not thinking I'd ever have the opportunity to try their amazing food!)
Johnny and Marius has had their own catering company called Slippery Spoon Catering for more than 6 years and they never considered opening a restaurant, but Blaauwklippen had other plans for these talented chefs and in a space of 6 weeks Hamm&Uys Eatery opened their doors on this beautiful wine estate!

ABOUT HAMM&UYS EATERY:
"This country casual restaurant, with classic Winelands elegance and modern touches, focuses on “the good, honest food you grew up with” combined with the chefs’ global culinary experiences and inspiration."
This is one of the main reasons we wanted to visit this restaurant because; they take memories you grew up with and turn them into a food experience down memory lane.
Okay so let's get into the review!
Firstly, they treat you like absolute kings and queens at this restaurant! We were welcomed with some bubbly (all from Blaauwklippen of course) and then started off with their "Manna to the Table" dish (this is the complimentary 'starter' for all guests who enjoy a meal here):

Manna to the Table
Askoek | Home-made Boland mosbolletjies | Music paper bread | Home-made cultured farm butter | Home-made jam de jour | Monterosso extra virgin olive oil | A glass of sparkling wine on the house. All of our breads are prepared using a sourdough starter and freshly baked in our wood-fire oven each morning
STARTERS:
We were the first people to try their new Asparagus tart and it's honestly the perfect starter for summer with amazing fresh flavours. Of course we had to have their famous West Coast Mussels - it's a dish you'll go back for - trust me!
Just on a side note - I highly recommend the wines at Blaauwklippen, so go for it and ask their waiters to suggest a wine that suits your meal - we were super impressed!

Asparagus Tart - Fire Roasted asparagus souffle tart, baby vine leaf salad, shaved Huguenot cheese and preserved lemon

West Coast Mussels - Mussel pot prepared with white wine, garlic and fresh parsley
MAINS:
Johnny clearly knows the way to our hearts with the mains! Most of you will know I'm a Karoo girl and nothing makes me happier than a delicious piece of meat. The T-bone steak at Hamm & Uys is meant to be shared and comes with the most delicious trimmings:

T-BONE
Fire-roasted, pasture-raised T-bone (250g) + bone marrow – Cabbage preserved lemon, cumin and tomato salad - Hand cut baton fries
What would a steak be without a glass of red!

DESSERT:
At Hamm & Uys you'll experience dessert unlike anything you've ever tried. It's traditional South African desserts reinvented! Just have a look at their version of a koeksister (highly recommended!):

SLETSISTER
A koeksister prepared crepe suzette style table side with Blaauwklippen 10 year potstill brandy flambé. Finished with coconut three ways.
We ended off our sweet treat experience with a bit of "boeretroos" in the form of a Affogato:

Affogato
Strong moerkoffie witha scoop of condensed milk ice cream
A very special thank you to the amazing Johnny and Marius for hosting us and for one of the most memorable meals we've had in ages! We cannot wait to share your divine food with all of our friends! Here's to many more delicious meals together!
